The Sagittial Plane

The sagittal plane is a longitudinal axis that passes from front (anterior) to back (posterior).

It divides the body into right and left halves.

The midsagittal line is an axis transecting the body, dividing it into equal left and right halves.

A parasagittal axis (line) is any longitudinal axis running parallel to the midsagittal axis (line).

The parasagittal axis and midsagittal axes are in the same longitudinal plane.

Parasagittal=parallel to the sagittal plane.

Both are commonly referred to as the sagittal plane.

Looking at the left or right side of the body is the sagittal view.

The sagittal view looks along the length of the sagittal axis.

The sagittal view is used to refer to any parasagittal section within the sagittal plane

It is perpendicular to both the coronal plane (vertical) and the transverse plane (horizontal).

Flexion and Extension are the primary movements of the limbs within the sagittal plane.
